Sketch 82: Bullseye!

Robotron bet Sheriff Lonn he could take him in a fight.
Sheriff Lonn put his gun belt on and said,
"Step outside, punk. I'll prove you ain't right."

The robot was sure, but the lawman had a cure
For big Robotron's pig-headed ego.
He blasted all ova' with his laser pistolas,
And cried, "Robot, you ain't my amigo!"

By the end of the volley, Robo realized his folly,
As he took a shot straight to the eye.
And as the big bot retreated, utterly defeated,
Lonn yelled, "Cross me again, and you'll die!"

This was the last sketch from my night of cartoons, doodles, and coziness. Soon after finishing this one, I dozed off to the Voltron Lions fighting (shock!) a Robeast. Pure nerd joy.

Sketch 81: Ouch.

... another sketch from UP night. By this point, my lovely cohabitator had started to drift off on the couch, beside me. So I took the opportunity push the nerdiness to the next level, and put on The Animatrix! It's such an incredible collection of animated shorts! I had forgotten how captivating all that Matrix stuff was when it first hit.

Anyway, the robots started flowing, as did the more rugged sketch style. This guy apparently forgot to load his pistol before the fight started. Those repairs to his headgear are gonna cost 'im.

Sketch 80: Wrong Side of the Mother Board

I imagine even robots wake up a little grumpy, sometimes.

This is another one from the night of UP. I think maybe by now, we'd moved on to watching the end of Raising Victor Vargas (highly recommended).

Sketch 79: Inna City, Deliver Me

My special ladyfriend and I went to see UP in 3-D at The Castro Theater last night. It was wonderful -- such a magical film, and the theater itself is something out of another time. Needless to say, I came home charged like Megatron high off dat energon, ready to blast my way through a pile of sketchbooks!

Also, when we got back, PBS was showing an in depth documentary on The Western Addition (our neighborhood in S.F.), and how its poor black citizens had to fight against rampant urban renewal (aka gentrification) that took hold after World War II. It was a great program, and really struck a chord with me. The same thing is STILL going down in San Francisco, and the African American population is steadily dwindling. Somewhere between the documentary, it's mention of all the jazz clubs and music of the Fillmore District here, and my feelings on this city's race issues, this sketch came out.

I guess adversity and ill feelings really are great inspiration.

Sketch 78: Lonely Young Ronin

Lonely young ronin, more brutal than Conan,
Tell me now, why do you cry?

"Well, I'm worn to the bone and I miss my dear home,
And that Shogun, he ain't a nice guy.

"He orders my buddies to fight foreign cruddies,
He spreads death o'er the land like a flood.

"He's instilled in those younger, this undying hunger,
and all that will sate it is blood."

- Bunker, out.

ps-- If you look real close, you'll see that the buzzards in the background are milling around dead, crucified soldiers. "The horror... the horror...."

Sketch 77: Damn The Torpedoes!

"Damn the torpedoes! Damn the torpedoes!
Who the hell ordered this shit?!?"

"The choice must be easy for Captain O'Sheezey,
But I'm first to die when we hit."

Sketch 76: Frankenstein's Monster, a Nazi, a Samurai, and Thing (from Adams Family) Walk Into a Bar....

Frankenstein's Monster got as drunk as a skunk,
His tolerance much weaker than his undead funk.

The nazi was stuck outside in the dark,
For he had 3 panzers and no place to park.

Thing had eyes for the stoic samurai,
He ordered some sake and rested on dude's thigh.

But the samurai diced him with moves swift and bold,
'Cause he enjoyed his sake unfiltered and cold.

Duh.

Sketch 75: Jardin Muerto

I started this sketch late last night. My special lady and I had just gotten back from seeing Jenny Lewis at The Fillmore (incredible performance, by the way). I was playing a documentary on the Germany vs. Russia front of World War II, when this doodle started creeping from the tips of my markers. So I assume that's where some of the inspiration came from.

I gotta say, for as many war documentaries as I've seen, it still never ceases to amaze me how absolutely fucking BRUTAL humans can be. It' just insane.

Anyway, hope you dig the piece. Ghetto rock the casbah and all that.

Moto, moto, moto... nice.

Sketch 73: Victory

Another actual-size sketch I did on Tuesday, for one of the "Undefeated" installation pieces. This is the big one that will be at the back of the store, titled "Victory." It's about 10 feet tall, so that (in the final) his gloves will actually reach above where the solid wall ends, and extend over part of the windows to the upstairs office. Fun with cut-outs!
Also, the blank space across his midsection is where I'll be mounting a series of 12 framed pieces (rough color drawings, with collage), each depicting one round in The Angel's title bout against the main villain of the show, The Brute.

Raw power!

Sketch 71: Experience #2

Here's the second sketch called "Experience." I'm thinking I'll move this subject matter into a series of paintings, involving gritty, old figures and faces. I'd like to make it a raw commentary on the process of aging. A lot's been going on, lately, that has me considering the grounding force of mortality.

This was made particularly for a collector of mine, in Minneapolis.

"Workin' up a black sweat!"

Sketch 70: In The Grip

I've been expanding on some of my fine art themes. This is the evolution of the Ignorance character some of you might know from earlier blog posts. I'm taking a much more visceral approach to when it strikes and "clouds" the thinking of these victims I'm painting.

Sketch 69: Goggles & Curls

Gee, now that I realize this is my 69th sketch, I almost wish I'd done something naughty for it. Ah well, maybe I'll draw an orgy scene for Sketch 169. In the meantime, this is another piece from last week's Drink & Draw in Los Angeles. I barely had the drawing done, by the end of the night. I went in and painted on it Saturday afternoon. And I just added the white highlights and linework, maybe 20 minutes ago.

The icing on the cake for me, though, was getting to watch the newest "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" trailer, while I waited for the white paint to dry. Nyyyyyerd!

Sketch 68: Pow! Knokowt!

Several drinks into the night, Food One hands me a big piece of bristol with a raw, splattery boxer drawing on it. He says, "It's a boxer drawing! Finish it!" You know how we do.

- Bunker, out to lunch!

Sketch 67: Don' Fuk With The Demon Hand

This was my "warm-up" piece at Drink-And-Draw. Love me some monsters and ugly faces....

- Bunker, Los Angeles taco style!

Sketch 66: Destroy

Mahfood and I rocked Drink-and-Draw in Hollywood, last night. There was delicious grilled chicken pizza, Samurai Champloo playing on the projection wall, and the Patron flowed freely. It was really great, getting buzzed and making art alongside some wonderful talents, including Dan Panosian (Incredible Hulk) and Dave Johnson (100 Bullets, the new GI Joe cartoon)... truly outrageous.

- Bunker love, from LA.

ps-- My apologies for the whack, out-of-place font/layout, with these posts from the road. The computer I'm working from isn't giving me the option to change my fonts, sizes, etc. Promise I'll fix it once I'm back in The Bunker.

Sketch 65: Winter Birds

After weeks and weeks of drawing the boxer characters, I've started to miss my Iron Gods. So I thought I'd whip one out, last Friday. It was the perfect opportunity for me to play around with a new marker and brush pen I got at Pearl, a few days prior.

Sketch 64: Here It Comes!

I've been doodling in my little Moleskin books, when I forget to bring along my larger sketchbooks. This is one of the sketches I worked up, this past Sunday, at Zeitgeist -- one of my first beloved SF watering holes.

Sketch 63: Step Into My Parlor...

Heheh... jeez, how many spider-puns am I gonna squeeze out of this for the next month?

More Spider-Man doodles. This time with a little more meat on 'im.

"I came to bring da pain...."

Sketch 62: "... Does Whatever a Spider Can!"

Told you guys I was drawing Spider-Man! I'm working on some sample pages, based on a script by my boy, Ivan Brandon (writer of "NYC Mech" and "Viking").

Nevermind the minor details of Spidey's costume. So far, I've just been focusing on figuring out his bendy, arachno-sapien, body movements. It does make a good excuse for me to work on my gesture/stick-figure-in-motion skills.

Thwipp!

Sketch 61: Villains

Been rocking out to the new DOOM album, "Born Like This," daily since last week. So of course, I've had bad guys on the brains. Which is perfect, since I've been needing to come up with an arch nemesis for my new lady adventurer.

This is a page of random doodling I did, in order to find her particular baddie. I've already picked him out, drawn him in further detail, and outlined his history with the protagonist. But I'm saving those tidbits for future posts. Ya can't have it all right away!
