Sketch 65: Winter Birds

After weeks and weeks of drawing the boxer characters, I've started to miss my Iron Gods. So I thought I'd whip one out, last Friday. It was the perfect opportunity for me to play around with a new marker and brush pen I got at Pearl, a few days prior.

Commissions, Ahoy!

"Humbug!" for John of Silverfish Galleries

"Silverfish Airship" for John of Silverfish Galleries

"Del Tha Funkee Homosapien" for Scott in Canada

"Aesop Rock" for Scott in Canada

Thanks to all the collectors, fans, and friends who came through for my commission sale, this past month. People's requests were all unique, and the pieces I've done so far have been a blast to create. Above are some of the ones I got scanned today.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Some of the pieces I'm still working on include a team-shot of The BPRD, and a rehash of Prince's "Purple Rain" album cover. Hells yeah!

Sketch 64: Here It Comes!

I've been doodling in my little Moleskin books, when I forget to bring along my larger sketchbooks. This is one of the sketches I worked up, this past Sunday, at Zeitgeist -- one of my first beloved SF watering holes.

Sketch 63: Step Into My Parlor...

Heheh... jeez, how many spider-puns am I gonna squeeze out of this for the next month?

More Spider-Man doodles. This time with a little more meat on 'im.

"I came to bring da pain...."

Sketch 62: "... Does Whatever a Spider Can!"

Told you guys I was drawing Spider-Man! I'm working on some sample pages, based on a script by my boy, Ivan Brandon (writer of "NYC Mech" and "Viking").

Nevermind the minor details of Spidey's costume. So far, I've just been focusing on figuring out his bendy, arachno-sapien, body movements. It does make a good excuse for me to work on my gesture/stick-figure-in-motion skills.

Thwipp!

Sketch 61: Villains

Been rocking out to the new DOOM album, "Born Like This," daily since last week. So of course, I've had bad guys on the brains. Which is perfect, since I've been needing to come up with an arch nemesis for my new lady adventurer.

This is a page of random doodling I did, in order to find her particular baddie. I've already picked him out, drawn him in further detail, and outlined his history with the protagonist. But I'm saving those tidbits for future posts. Ya can't have it all right away!

Sketch 60: Brace For Impact!

Like many an action hero pilot, my flying lady has had her fair share of crashes, close-shaves, and miraculous landings. Damn, this is fun to work on!

I apologize for being so tardy with the past few days of sketches. I've just been putting together a new portfolio, doing some Spider-man test stuff, and catching up on commissions. I've scanned a batch of new doodles (of a new villain AND Spidey), but will have to post 'em later today (if not tomorrow). I'll be back on the ball by Monday, fer sure.
A'ight! I gotsta run! Sonoma's calling.

Sketch 59: New Comic Character (now with the action!)

Here are more shots of my new, fair lady. She's all about the hand-to-hand whoop-ass. Guns and katana swords are great for action books, but I want to challenge myself by making her find less obvious ways of dealing with her foes.
I'm gonna work up a one-shot with this character (and her crew of cohorts) for San Diego Comic Con. Hopefully, I can squeeze it in between pages of "Diabloville" and my other commitments.

Rock rock rocket!

Sketch 58: New Comic Character!

So, somewhere between watching "Das Boot" and "Star Trek: The Original Series," I've created a new action comic character. She's tall, spry, and pear-shaped. She's also an incredible pilot. I'm talking Sky Captain meets Han Solo meets Baloo (from Tailspin) "incredible." Above are some of my doodles of her face and costume.

Mad Hatter Commission!

Here's a Mad Hatter piece I just rocked for longtime fan-friend, and purveyor of delicious Nicaraguan rums, Fernando. Dig the madness!

There's less than a week left in my Commission Sale. If you're on the fence, get your order in before Monday, April 20th (4/20, brah!). Or else you're gonna be that sad kid at the playground, with the gum in their hair and NO original art by yours truly.

Sketch 57: Shoot To Kill

Again with the "Das Boot" doodles! This here started as a random sketch of a submarine captain, morphed into a bad Toshiro Mifune portrait, then melted into some death threats with a ray-gun. Zap!

- Bunker, out.

Sketch 56: Grim 1

I was up late, last night, watching the second hour of "Das Boot" and doodling. That's a TENSE movie! Anyway, these creepy dead dudes were some of the fruits of the session.

Sketch 55: Kid Potential 2

In this sketch, we see a handful of neutral children. Also, we begin to see the transformation caused by one of the kids dipping into his potential for evil. Mwa-ha-ha.

- Bunker, out.

Sketch 54: "Kid Potential 1

The children in "Undefeated" represent the larvae stage of what the gigantic, monster boxers are. They are, to the boxers, what Paul Muadib was to those giant worms in "Dune." This kinda gives them the freedom to become ultra-beasts, or the boxing angels. In this sketch, all of the children are neutral... clean slates.

Well, mostly clean.

S.A.D. 53: The Numerical Rumble of Plus vs. Minus

Haha... feels like I'm channeling the characters Plus & Minus from "Pinwheel," this children's program on Nickelodeon from way back when. But yeah, this is a continuation of the good v. evil and childhood innocence themes, mentioned in yesterday's sketch.

I'm sketching different kids, and the physical effects of their chosen allegiances. So expect to see some battered cherubsas and monstrous adolescents, in future posts. I'm going with boys AND girls, because I've never been a big fan of a sausage fest.

Oog... feeling a little shakey in the studio, today. I dunno if it's because I skipped my morning jog, or because I almost polished off our bottle of Flor de Cana, last night. Either way, I'm hoping today's playlist will get the blood flowing to my brain:

Tunes --
Mos Def "Black On Both Sides"
Miles Davis "A Day In Paris"
X-Girl "Back To The Mono Kero"

Video --
Afro Samurai: Resurrection
Star Trek: Original Series, Season 1

"My umi says, 'Shine your light on the world!'"

S.A.D. 52: The Annunciation

This is a new sketch for "Undefeated." I'm pushing into some new territory with the exhibit, and exploring more good vs. evil themes. Children are becoming a larger part of the visual vocabulary. While I'm using them to represent innocence, I'm going to infuse them with the potential for both benevolence and malevolence.

Oddly enough, after discussing the theme for "Undefeated" with my curator, I've been realizing that there are huge similarities between this show, and the one I'd previously brainstormed, "We Can Be Heroes." So I'll be working to develop the common threads, and weave 'em into a full-on, cable knit sweater of an exhibit, between now and August.

Sketches from Emerald City Comic Con!

Dig these sketches I did for a few fine collectors, this past weekend:

"Delirium" - 12 x 14" watercolor & marker on paper

"Creeper" - 9 x 12" watercolor & marker in sketchbook

"Roger Dodger" - 12 x 14" watercolor & marker on paper

"Mad Hatter" - 11 x 14" ink & watercolor on bristol

"Joker" - 11 x 14" ink & watercolor on bristol

"Tony Montana/SCARFACE" - 11 x 14" ink, silver Sharpie & watercolor on bristol

This year's Emerald City Comic Con was an absolute BLAST! I got to hang with great friends and colleagues, eat a delicious array of meals, experience a beautiful city, and rock a sexcellent convention! Big ups to Jim & George Demonakos, Chris and the volunteer crew, and all the fans who made the show such an astounding success. And a special thanks to all the fans (both new and old) who stopped by the table to inquire about my art, get stuff signed, and gobble up my books/prints/original art. I appreciate the attention, and the fact that you spent your hard-earned dollars on lil' old me.

I've already started planning new merchandise for my next convention, San Diego Comic Con, in July. Until then, I'll be in the lab, cooking up my monstrous art mechanations.

S.A.D. 51: I Have You Now!

After watching "Heroes" with lunch, and then drawing with the series finale of "Battlestar Galactica" playing in the studio, it's no wonder I whipped up this Sci-Fi vs. Superhero doodle. Plus, I'm still coming off of the high of an AWESOME Emerald City Comic Con, this past weekend. So my geek chi is centered like the planets at the end of the "Masters of The Universe" movie.

Eye of the tiger! Growl!

Emerald City Comic Con THIS WEEKEND!

I'm proud to announce that the marvelous Demonakos Family has invited me to be a guest at the Emerald City ComicCon, this weekend. I'll be flying to Seattle for what's shaping up to be an incredible two days of comics/sci-fi-culture fun. Fellow guests include Jim Mahfood, Mike Huddleston, Bob Schreck, Scott Morse, Ben Templesmith, Mike Mignola, and many more. I'll also have a monster painting featured in "Monsters & Dames." This limited-edition charity artbook will be for sale during the convention, with part of the proceeds benefitting the Seattle Children's Hospital.
For more info on the show:
Emerald City ComicCon website.

I'll have sexy merchandise available, including the "Everybody's DEAD" TPB, a limited reprinting of "Sender/Receiver," and prints. I'm also bringing some ultra-limited-edition, hand-printed apparel that I co-created with Deadbeatsister -- hoodies, t-shirts, and tunic dresses, while supplies last!

And, of course, I'll be doing commissioned sketches (see samples above). That includes black & white pieces, as well as watercolor art. Keeping in line with my current commission sale on hiredmeat.com, I'm charging $50 for black & white sketches, $75 for pieces with limited color, and $100 for full-color art. If you're attending the convention and want a sketch, please hit me up ASAP, so you can beat the line. I've already gotten commission orders for the convention, online! So yeah... don't get left in the dust, kid.

I'm looking forward to rocking Seattle, yet again. Hope that some of you Bunker Folk can make it out.

S.A.D. 50: Poison Pit

Yesterday, I broke out some Themselves, an artsy hip-hop crew that I fell head-over-heels in love with, back in 2004. It's great, weirdo, drum machine-laced stuff. A total blast. Since then, they've transmorphed into a whole other, even more powerful band, called Subtle. But this doodle is based on an old Themselves tune, entitled "Poison Pit." Dig.

S.A.D. 49: Swift Death

I was up late, a few nights ago, and churned this guy out. I'd just finished watching a great documentary on the Jonestown Massacre, on PBS. I wasn't tired after that, so I stayed up doodling and watching "Bonnie & Clyde." Damn, that was a good movie. Talk about "swift death." Even though I knew how the film ended, I STILL jumped halfway off the couch when the shooting started. Truly, the sign of a good movie.

"We rob banks."

S.A.D. 49: Surfs Up!

I drew this guy on a beach called Los Arcos, in Mexico. It's named after these massive rock formations the spring forth from the water, just off shore, with high-arching caves running beneath them. My lady and friends were snorkeling around, scaring fish and trying to avoid sea urchin stingers, while I hung out on our little towel-camp, splattering watercolors on my new sketchbook. The scenery was insanely beautiful. Makes me wish I was at the beach right now.

S.A.D. 47: Ready To Blow!

"The roar of the crowd washing over him, the slugger remained focused. His only thoughts were of raining blow after blow on his opponent. His only goal, to reduce the other man to rubble."

S.A.D. 46: Love Molotov

It's a fragile line, ya'll, betwixt the passions of affection and violence.

S.A.D. 45: Bye Now.

Whoa! No doubt, I've been slacking on the Sketch-A-Day Challenge. Life's been extra busy, these past few months. But hell, who ISN'T busy? So here I am, kicking it with the sketch jams, once again.
This "Bye Now" drawing is actually from a month ago. I just never posted it.
