Emerald City Comic Con THIS WEEKEND!

I'm proud to announce that the marvelous Demonakos Family has invited me to be a guest at the Emerald City ComicCon, this weekend. I'll be flying to Seattle for what's shaping up to be an incredible two days of comics/sci-fi-culture fun. Fellow guests include Jim Mahfood, Mike Huddleston, Bob Schreck, Scott Morse, Ben Templesmith, Mike Mignola, and many more. I'll also have a monster painting featured in "Monsters & Dames." This limited-edition charity artbook will be for sale during the convention, with part of the proceeds benefitting the Seattle Children's Hospital.

I'll have sexy merchandise available, including the "Everybody's DEAD" TPB, a limited reprinting of "Sender/Receiver," and prints. I'm also bringing some ultra-limited-edition, hand-printed apparel that I co-created with Deadbeatsister -- hoodies, t-shirts, and tunic dresses, while supplies last!

And, of course, I'll be doing commissioned sketches (see samples above). That includes black & white pieces, as well as watercolor art. Keeping in line with my current commission sale on hiredmeat.com, I'm charging $50 for black & white sketches, $75 for pieces with limited color, and $100 for full-color art. If you're attending the convention and want a sketch, please hit me up ASAP, so you can beat the line. I've already gotten commission orders for the convention, online! So yeah... don't get left in the dust, kid.

APE Live Art Flyer and Smoker!

Dig it, kiddies! Here's the black & white version of my flyer for our upcoming APE Live Art Party, along with a "Smoker Study" that's soon-to-become a new Hiredmeat/Deadbeatsister (DeadMeat) apparel design. Rawr!



I'll have the flyer colored and disseminated online in a couple days. Jim Mahfood has also done a design, with colors by Justin Stewart. We'll have printed postcards with both our pieces in the next week, just in time to blast SF with word of the event. If you're in The Bay Area during APE (The Alternative Press Expo) weekend, you should come join us. It's gonna be a night of visual, musical ecstacy!

Just thought I'd share a few photos of yours truly, modeling the "San Francisco Knight" tees that Deadbeatsister printed up for last weekend's Treasure Island Music Festival. For the tees, the image is wrapping around from the right side of the garment, rather than just being placed dead-center on the chest. This is the white-on-gray tee, obviously, but she also put the image on zip-up & pull-over hoodies, tunic dresses, and scarves. I'll get photos of that apparel up here sooner or later.

Wonder Woman, Lady Justice, and a Lucky Robot!

Check out these new images I've been working on. Two are for charity event auctions, and the other is a tattoo commission.


This Wonder Woman drawing is for Wonder Woman Day 3, an event raising money and awareness for domestic violence shelters and a woman's crisis line. For more info, check out the Wonder Woman Day 3 website. I'm going to hit this up with some watercolor and marker, so look for the colorized version post week.


This is my "Lucky Robot," for From The Land Beyond: Sacramento's Horror & Sci-Fi show. It will be part of their Charity Art Auction to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Loaves & Fishes Mustard Seed School for Homeless Children.


Last, but not least, this Riot Grrl Lady Justice is a tattoo commission I'm doing for a lawyer-in-training I met out here in The Bay. Whoop!

San Francisco Knight!

Since Kelly (my Special Ladyfriend) is Deadbeatsister in her work and I'm Hiredmeat in mine, we combine to form DeadMeat. Check out this new design we've come up with:

It's called "San Francisco Knight." He's one of my Floating City characters, who are akin to the Iron Gods I draw and paint. They float thru massive skies, with buildings and telephone wires sprouting from their backs. This guy, of course, is totally meant to represent SF.

We're going to be featuring this image on scarves, shirts, and zip-up-hoodies. Kelly printed the hell outta this, today, in her studio. I'll try to get some photos of the results up soon.

Deadbeatsister gorilla collabo and more!

Check out these Gorilla Mitts I finished, today! They're part of an apparel design that I'm collaborating on with my girlfriend. She'll be printing the final piece for the next line of goods from her company, Deadbeatsister. Whoop! I'm handing the drawing off to her, today. Once she's added her photo-collage magic to it, I'll have the finished image up here tout de suite!

Also, I drew this Steam Man image last week. It was gonna be a sticker design (and may still be, further down the road). But I ended up using it as the back image for my new promo cards. Jiggy!

My Lady Rocks the Hot Fashion!

That's right, kids! My lovely ladyfriend, Kelly (aka Deadbeatsister) got caught on SF Weekly's blog, not only killing it with her own outfit, but also punk-ass designers with her badass, original silkscreened apparel! Check out the write up at: My Girlfriend Kicks Ass

DeadMeat, Monkey vs. Cobra, and Timbuk2

Tonight's post mixes a little bit of The New with a bit of the Not-So-New.

The New: My lovely lady and I have been collaborating on apparel designs since we met. But, recently, we've decided to give it a bit more structure. Namely, "DeadMeat," the creative spawn of her Deadbeatsister skillz and my Hiredmeat mayhem. Our first design under the new imprint is a little diddly inspired by the Plato quote, "Only the dead have seen the end of war."

One of the themes for my gallery show in August is war, and a few of my sketches for those pieces have involved daisies (as in, "Pushin' up daisies). That, along with my admiration of the quote whipped around in my head and resulted in the ink drawing to the right. We'll be launching this on shirts at Wondercon in a couple weeks. I'll post the final, colorized piece (along with photos of the shirts) when they're done.

The Not-So-New: Last fall/winter, Timbuk2 (designers of fine messenger bags) invited me to take part in their Artists Originals program. They sent me the chewy canvas center strip of one of their medium-sized shoulder bags, and let me paint whatever I wanted on it. Being a total nerd for kung-fu movies, I got stuck on the idea "Monkey vs. Cobra".

I started with these simple sketches of the beasties. I researched ancient Chinese art and tried to give them a sort of Asian flair.

From there, I came up with the mischievous darlings above. I think I was reading a TON of "Blade of the Immortal" when I was doing this stuff, too. It makes sense... that book KILLS! Great characters, and fabulous artwork.

From sketch to canvas, things went sorta like this. Sorry I don't have a better photo of the Monkey portion of the bag. But ya get the gist of it.

Painted and done, I ran my strip of canvas over to the Timbuk2 shop near my spot. And a few weeks later, their slave army of elves had turned it into a full-on messenger bag. Amazing!

In December, Timbuk2 held a Holiday party at Ritual Cafe (this sexcellent coffee shop down in The Mission district), where they were selling the Artists Original bags, with part of the proceeds going to charity. Unfortunately, some fine young woman bought my bag, like, 3 minutes before I got there and could take better pictures of it. Fortunately, some fine young woman is walking around San Francisco, sporting my art on her bag for everyone to see.

Anyway, I'm off to more misadventures in inkblots.
