New Drawings, At Last!

It's been far too long since I last posted! Between the day job, freelance and catching up on commissions, making time to scan and share my work online has become quite a challenge. But the show must go on!

The above drawings are actually pencil on paper, save for "Underdog A.D."-- the sinister looking dog in the space helmet. This selection is from the 2009 - 2010 era. I unearthed them, while sorting & storing years worth of sketchbooks, from the late 90's all the way to now.

And I'll have more art to share, soon. As I said, I'm catching up on an outrageous backlog of commissioned drawings. I'm also trying to wrap up some comic book commitments that I've been sleeping on. And, lastly, I have been working on the final 10 pieces of Alphabet Attack! Series 3.

Whew! So you can look forward to seeing more of that work pour out, as it's completed.

Print Progress

Just over a month ago, an illness and some traveling forced me to postpone work on the series of Seasons prints I'd planned on creating this year. Well, after some schedule juggling and sacrificial slaying, I'm digging in once more!

I was originally going to kick off the series with "Spring," but we're now well into summer. With that in mind, I've decided to release these first two prints together as a set. Above, you can see the early drawing stage of "Summer" and a revised version "Spring."

Look for the finish on these Monday. In the meantime, have a badass weeekend!

From Pencils to "POP, POP!"

I've been doing my best to document my process, lately. Partially for posterity, and partially to analyze the work as I'm churning it out. Above, you can see some of the jumps from the pencil drawing stage, to the painting and, finally, to the finished piece.

There are lots of decisions made along the way in these color drawings. Some of them are very technical. But there's also a lot of instinct involved. Personally, I'm always trying to find that balance between utilizing learned skills, and letting the beast loose on the canvas.

One-Panel Strip, In The Works

Fresh from an amazing, rejuvenating trip to Toronto and northeastern USA, I'm rocking a new one-pane strip for a long-time client of mine. This month's cartoon pokes fun at the ridiculous amount of fiscal cuts to California's much-needed public services and resources.

The client thought the state outline wasn't recognizable enough, so I ended up taking out one of the characters in the revised version. Also -- on the suggestion of a talented friend -- I added the "CA" label, to make it totally obvious that these people are holding onto California for dear life, and not just some random shape.

I just got approval to go to final, from my art director. So now it's on to the inking and graytones!

On The Slate -- Band Portrait Pencils

Today's installment features in-progress shots of a commissioned band portrait. Lately, I've been trying to keep the energy in my drawings nice and loose. Despite some of the harder lines, what I'm going for here is freedom and motion. I find that this keeps the subject matter exciting and in flux, right up until I lay in the last bits of finished line work.

S.A.D. 07: "Down Periscope"

I hope you all had a great Martin Luther King Junior day, and got some time to reflect.

I'd say more, but I'm still whooped from yesterday. And I've gotta get up early tomorrow... gonna go watch the Obama Inauguration projected on a big, outdoor screen at San Francisco's Civic Center Park. Holy history in the making, Batman!

S.A.D. 03: I Wish They All Could Be California Grrls!

California seriously has some of the most exotic, diverse, and strange women I've ever known or seen in my travels across this Great Union. That thought struck me this morning, and was immediately followed by a mental image of a girl in stunna-shades wearing the Cali bear's hide as a cloak. Toss in a star, and you've got the California Republic flag (see photo below).

I think this might be the beginning of a series of "California Grrl" pieces. Like I said, suuuch a diverse selection of women, from style to lifestyle, attitude to ethnicity. It's incredible.

Or maybe I'm just drunk on all this summery weather we're having here. Whoo, Lordy.

ps-- I drew this using some cool pencils my friends got me during their honeymoon in Japan, from the Studio Ghibli (
Miyazaki) museum in Mitaka. Thanks, Scott and Angie. Or I mean, ahem, arigato.
