Big Works In Progress

Here are a few works-in-progress photos, featuring two new drawings. I haven't worked larger than 14 x 18" in awhile, so pieces this big make for an exciting workout. It's nuts how much of your body you can put into the drawing process, when you do things at a larger scale.

"I Ain't Afraid of You."

I started a new sketchbook, recently. It's a pretty common thing, for artists to be nervous about drawing on the very first page of a new sketchbook. So I thought I'd start this one by kicking that notion square in the teeth. It was also a fun excuse to sketch an old character of mine, whom I haven't played with in a very long while.

Eat Your Art Out: Live Painting

"Untitled" / 28 x 48" / acrylic on canvas

This beast-tastic explosion was my live art contribution to Eat Your Art Out 6, this past Saturday. I rocked it in a solid, 3-hour session of paint-slinging, people-chatting, and beer-spilling action.

Kudos to my fellow live artists: Jim Mahfood, Andy Howell & Matthew Powell. And many thanks to Jane Dope & friends, The Angel City Derby Girls, and everyone else who helped make this year's event such a blast!

"Horned Beast"

"Horned Beast"
18 x 24" / watercolor, acrylic & ink on paper

I was just playing around with watercolors on large sheets of paper, when this image began to take shape. More or less, it's a warm-up sketch gone wild.

Don't let that dazed look in her eyes fool you. This lady's a born killer. And whatever horn-headed creature used to own that skull she's sporting as a hat, the poor beast clearly never stood a chance.

"Crouch"

I actually started this piece during a symposium at Tr!ckster, back in July. Then I worked on it bit by bit, over a month or so. I finally put the kibosh on her today, after fidgeting with the blade a bunch. It's funny... I didn't realize back when I started this, but her pose is totally a study for the "Original Energy" drawing I posted recently. Guess I've got a real thing for crouching female warrior creatures!

The piece measures 9" x 12" and is made of watercolors, gouache & ink on paper. Whoo-paint!

Print Progress

Just over a month ago, an illness and some traveling forced me to postpone work on the series of Seasons prints I'd planned on creating this year. Well, after some schedule juggling and sacrificial slaying, I'm digging in once more!

I was originally going to kick off the series with "Spring," but we're now well into summer. With that in mind, I've decided to release these first two prints together as a set. Above, you can see the early drawing stage of "Summer" and a revised version "Spring."

Look for the finish on these Monday. In the meantime, have a badass weeekend!

Stone Knife

This is where all my "Dangerous Women" pieces started, kids -- "Stone Knife." I did this skate deck commission last year, for my boy Mat from the Frenchpulp crew. He was kind enough to work his photography magic and shoot some quality documentation of the piece for me, all the way from Lille, France. Many thanks!

Bedlam

This is a drawing I whipped up over the weekend, loosely based on a painting I've been working on, called "Her Glorious Pelt." Just more of my explorations on themes of brutal domination, raw power, and sexual ferocity.
